How Does an Ultrasound Work?
If you're facing an unexpected pregnancy and unsure about what to do, getting an ultrasound is an essential first step.
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of what’s happening inside your body. A device called a transducer sends these waves through your abdomen or into the vaginal canal. The sound waves bounce off tissues, including the developing pregnancy, and return to the device, translating them into a picture on a screen.
This image provides valuable information about your pregnancy and helps you make an informed decision about your next steps.
Why Is an Ultrasound Important?
If you’ve had a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound is the next step to gather important details about your pregnancy and overall health. It’s common to have at least two during pregnancy, but your doctor may ask for more if they feel it’s needed.
An ultrasound helps determine the following:
How far along you are, or your gestational age, can impact your options.
If the pregnancy is developing, since about 26% of pregnancies naturally end in miscarriage, an ultrasound can check for signs of viability.
The location of the pregnancy, because in rare cases, a pregnancy can develop outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy), which is a medical emergency requiring immediate care.
There are two types of ultrasounds:
Transvaginal ultrasound: Often used in early pregnancy, this method involves inserting a small transducer into the vagina for a clearer image.
Abdominal ultrasound: This method, used later in pregnancy, involves moving the transducer over the belly to capture images externally.
